So legend goes, Pergolesi was commissioned by the monks of the brotherhood of San Luigi di Palazzo in Naples, to compose a musical setting to the text of the Stabat Mater. Despite suffering from tuberculosis he accepted the task, rising from his deathbed to compose in a fit of devotional frenzy before passing away aged only 26. Drawing inevitable comparisons to Mozart's deathbed Requiem, Pergolesi’s beautiful and intoxicating Stabat Mater was one of the most popular works of its time and remains so today.
