Dieter Kober\, founder and longest tenured music director of any professional orchestra in the U.S. returns to the podium to open the Chicago Chamber Orchestra’s 58th season of admission-free concerts. The program will begin with a rare observance of Labor Day – Handel’s depiction of the labors of Hercules\, derived from Greek mythology\, and will continue with three contrasting works of concert variations on popular themes by little and well known composers. Renowned violoncellist Cheng-Hou Lee\; is featured guest artist in Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations”.

Beethoven's Trio for Clarinet\, Cello and Piano\, one of his earlier works\, stays to true to the Classical style\, but shows signs of his future harmonic explorations.

Peter Lieberson\: The Coming of Light - WORLD PREMIERE!
CCM will honor the 100th anniversary of Unity Temple by Frank Lloyg Wright with a world premiere performance of Peter Lieberson's The Coming of Light on September 27. This work\, comissioned by the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation and CCM\, sets six poems by Shakespeare\, John Ashbery and Mark Strand to music and features strings\, oboe and voice.
The piece will receive its world premiere on Sunday\, September 27th at the Unity Temple Concert Series.This special concert will also feature works by Cimarosa\, Beethoven and Barber.
Susan Payne\, mezzo-soprano\, will be presenting an art song recital featuring the works of Manuel de Falla\, Samuel Barber and Johannes Brahms.

Maxim Rubtsov was appointed Principal Flute of the Russian National Orchestra in 2003. In addition to his international performances as soloist with the orchestra\, he regularly performs in chamber ensembles and is the leader and a founding member of the Russian National Orchestra Wind Quintet. His recent projects have included appearances with the Brubeck Brothers\, a series of solo flute performances for children\, and collaborations with contemporary dance masters Denis Boroditsky and Germaul Barnes. He will present a brief recital\, followed by a master class with accomplished flute students from the Bienen School of Music.

October's concerts showcase three of the 20th century's most revered composers and their chamber masterworks. On the program are three pieces that have become CCM signature works\: Barber's String Quartet\, Op. 11 - whose achingly beautiful Adagio movement was played at both FDR and JFK's funerals and was famously incorporated into the score of Apocalypse Now\; Stravinsky's dream-inspired Octet and Poulenc's jazz-influenced Sextet.
World-renowned cellist Lynn Harrell comes to Chicago to give a special master class for advanced Chicago-area cello students at Darnton &\; Hersh Fine Violins in the heart of Chicago's Loop (at Adams and Wabash\, a block from the Art Institute). Baritone Stephen Lusmann has sung leading roles with such major opera houses as the Oper der Stadt Bonn\, Opéra de Monte Carlo\, Stadttheater Luzern\, Opera Company of Philadelphia\, Boston Lyric Opera\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Opera Carolina\, Connecticut Grand Opera\, and Artpark. He has toured with the New York City Opera and has appeared as a concert soloist at Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall\, the Anchorage Festival of Music\, and the Chautauqua Institute as well as with numerous symphony orchestras. On recording he can be heard in Operngala (Tonstudio AMOS)\, E. E. Cummings\: An American Circus (Centaur)\, and Strauss's Der Friedenstag (Koch International). Lusmann is associate professor of voice at the University of Michigan.

A cosmopolitan artist influenced by numerous cultures\, Sodi Braide likes to explore a large repertoire of different styles and periods. Prize winner in the 2003 Leeds Competition and Jury Discretional Prize at the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition\, he performs recitals and chamber concerts throughout Europe and the United States. In 1994 Braide was invited to perform in South Africa\, becoming one of the first black African pianists to perform there after the end of apartheid.

CCM serves up \\"refreshment to the soul\\" (as Bach describes music) in this all-Baroque concert. Hertel's Concerto in E-flat\, written on te brink of the Classical era\, merges Baroque styles with burgeouning Classicism. Bach's Concerto for Two Violins is a favorite among violinists for its beautiful Largo movement and intertwining melodies\, and his spirited Orchestral Suite harkens back to the days of royal dances and soirées. Vivaldi's Concerto for Bassoon explores the soulfulness of the instrument. Telemann's advice to \\"give every instrument its due\\" is held true as each artist displays virtuosity in his Concerto in D Major.

Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons played by dazzling violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch highlights a program of baroque orchestral works in which art imitates nature. French master Jean Féry Rebel evokes the creation of the universe from the elements\, while Georg Philipp Telemann paints the river and its creatures in vivid musical colors. Conductor Nicholas Kraemer’s lively commentary weaves three fanciful works together.

Despite suffering from tuberculosis he accepted the task\, rising from his deathbed to compose in a fit of devotional frenzy before passing away aged only 26. Drawing inevitable comparisons to Mozart's deathbed Requiem\, Pergolesi’s beautiful and intoxicating Stabat Mater was one of the most popular works of its time and remains so today.

Finalist at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, Evgeni Bozhanov made his orchestral debut with his hometown orchestra in Rousse\, Bulgaria at age twelve. He has earned top prizes at the 2008 Casagrande (Terni\, Italy) and Sviatoslav Richter (Moscow\, Russia) competitions as well as first-prize at the Carl Beckstein Competition in 2006.

Our season concludes wiht some very special 'firsts'\: an appearance by the first winner of a new competition organized by Ars Viva and the Music Institute of Chicago (certain to be dazzling)\, and a return to the work that triumphantly concluded the first Ars Viva season in the North Shore Center\, Brahms' powerfully moving first symphony. Opening the concert is a brief but engaging homage to music by former CSO composer-in-residence\, John Corigliano.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will round out the Chicago Philharmonic's 20th Season. This grand masterpiece which features the ever popular \\"Ode to Joy\\" will be be presented with the North Shore Choral Society and the Ryan Center for Young Artists at Lyric Opera. One of the most influential symphonies ever written\, the piece is complicated\, powerful and most definitely exciting. The symphony will be performed in its entirety and will constitute a brilliant finish to the Chicago Philharmonic's anniversary season.

CCM concludes the 2009-2010 subscription series on the eve of Robert Schumann's 200th birthday (born June 8\, 1810) with the CCM debut performance of Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major\, Op. 44 - one of the most famous piano quintets in the canon. Brahms\, Schumann's protégé\, was inspired to write his clarinet trio by the virtuosity of clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld (to be performed by CCM's own Larry Combs). Bartók's third String Quartet rounds out the program with its volatile high spirits and palpable desolation - a fitting tribute to the genius and madness of Robert Schumann.
