The program features the world premiere of Robert Convery's "Star Song" and the Chicago area premieres of two works by Norwegian composer Andrew Smith. Also featured on the program is Arvo Part's "Magnificat", several of David Maddux's First Call arrangements as well as a cappella works by Britten, Grieg & Hawley.

Yuan-Qing Yu, Rembrandt violinist, reprises her spring 2008 critically acclaimed CSO performance of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons in a chamber setting. You won't want to miss it!  Mezzo Soprano Emily Lodine joins us for Brahms' Two Songs for Alto and Bach's Aria from Cantata No. 182. Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings with J. Lawrie Bloom, soloist, completes the program.

This concert will be repeated on Monday, December 8th at the Merit School of Music.

Four singers from Oslo’s Kulturentusiastene perform: Angelica Voje, mezzo-soprano, Janne Berglund, soprano, Eirik Roland Jensen, bass, Patrik Landgren, baritone and pianist Timothy Shaidlin. Celebrating the theme of the sea and its profound influence on Norwegian culture, this concert opens with Mozart’s Soave sia il vento and travels through seminal musical tributes to Old Norse Mythology by Wagner, excerpts from Grieg’s only opera, Olav Trygvason, Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Riders to the Sea, and Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes and Billy Budd. Presented in partnership with New York Opera Society.

The Erato Chamber Orchestra is comprised of Chicago’s finest musicians who have a common affection for making and sharing music. The ensemble’s programs are devoted to both classical and contemporary repertoire that is not ordinarily played by large symphony orchestras. Their name is inspired by the Greek goddess Erato, who is the Muse of Lyric Poetry. The orchestra’s style is characterized by a warm sound and virtuosic talent combined with an infectious enjoyment of the pleasure of making music.

Chicago Hurricane Relief Presents a Musical Benefit at the Music in the Loft

Friday, December 19, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.

This performance will feature Mr. John Sharp, Principal Cello of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, classical pianist Dr. Rita Simo and Chilean-American Chicago based singer, song-writer, producer Ms. Claudia Perez Brown.  

 

These great musicians have donated their talent and time for the cause of Cuba Hurricane Relief efforts.  Between August 30 and September 9, 2008, the combined action of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike unquestionably made them the most destructive in the history of Cuba with respect to the magnitude of the material damage caused.  After this season's devastating hurricane, Chicagoans are responding to collect donations to benefit Cuban and Haitian hurricane relief projects.   

All proceeds of this concert will be used for hurricane relief and reconstruction in Cuba.
